If you didn’t already know, Josh Johnson is the real deal.
Written by Joe Veno on June 21, 2009 – 11:02 AM -It sometimes takes shutting down the Yankees for fans around the globe to take notice.
And Josh Johnson has been noticed.
I know the stuff is there. After all, I did see him pitch in Spring Training–live–beating lefty Scotty Olsen. The tall righty flashes a heater that comes in on average, at 95 MPH. Which is easily, easily, the highest velocity of his young career. His repertoire also consists of an effective slider, and an effective change.
The guy is good.
An improvement in Bases on Balls is a large reason for Johnson’s success. He just hasn’t allowed many of them. 2.14 per nine to be exact. And while striking out over seven batters per game, that is plenty good.
But Johnson is very adept at keeping the ball on the ground as well. 53% of the time, he has induced grounders–which for a pitcher–is very good (like you didn’t know that).
And 17% of the time, hitters are hitting the ball on a line. Another reason to believe Josh Johnson will continue hanging around with success. As they mingle together outside of the local diner.
The BABIP–.275–doesn’t have much room to go. Could go against him a little, but if he is going to keep the ball on the ground, then it might not move much. And of course, if the ball is not being hit very hard, then it will not fall in as often either.
Josh Johnson is the real deal. He has the great fastball which has been producing great results. And since no one watches the Marlins, he now is known, after dominating the Yankees in South Florida.
